Harcum College Hosts 6th Annual Dental Expo --Sessions for dental professionals will provide insights into the most current techniques and treatments while fulfilling required CEU credits-- BRYN MAWR, PA – December 13, 2011 – The 6th Annual Dental Expo, hosted by Continuing Studies at Harcum College, will be held Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm on Harcum’s Bryn Mawr campus. This year’s Expo will feature several new and informative courses presented by local as well as national experts in the field of dentistry. Dental professionals will find courses of interest in a range of topics, including the pharmacology of anesthesia, developments in esthetic materials and restorations and technologies in dental hygiene practice, among others. Meetings of the Pennsylvania EFDA Association and Sigma Phi Alpha, the Dental Hygiene National Honor Society, will take place in the afternoon while information from exhibitors and sponsors will be available during breaks and the time allotted for lunch and networking. To expand on the networking and social interaction, Harcum will showcase its newly renovated Kevin D. Marlo Little Theatre during a complimentary wine and cheese reception from 4-5pm. Attendees will be given the option to participate in two three-hour approved courses, one morning session and one afternoon session, to receive a maximum of six CEU credits from the Pennsylvania EFDA Association/Pennsylvania Academic of Dental Hygiene Studies. “The courses are designed to discuss a variety of new developments in the dental field and enhance the skill sets of all attendants,” says Theresa Groody, Director of Professional Studies at Harcum College. “We encourage participants to select one class from each session that will pique their interest and cultivate their area of expertise.” Recognized as one of the leading providers of dental healthcare education in the Delaware Valley, Harcum will be hosting this professional conference for the sixth year in a row. February is National Children's Dental Health Month so today I made a special visit to Acorn Montessori School. Evelyn McCleod whois our reigning America's Mrs. helped arrange a visit to educate children on the importance of a healthy smile. What a team we made today, I gave a very fun educational lecture and Evelyn sponsored 100+ spin toothbrushes to all the children at Acorn Montessori. Today I represented the dental prefession and I appeared as a "former" Mrs. NJ. It was so cool that the children still wanted autographs of a "former " queen, I guess once a queen always a queen. . . so fun!!

A Fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project I ran in my first Tough Mudder event and yes it was Tough!!! This was a 12 mile run through the craziest obstacles that were muddy and wet. I don;t know what I was thinking it is November in New Jersey and the water that I had to swim in was a very chilly 45 degrees!! I had to overcome a lot of fear on this event, jumping into cold water from a 15" platform being the big one!! Thannks to my Teammates for helping me get through that!! A special thanks to my husband for supporting me and handling my Hypothermia, so glad you sat this one out!! I did not finish, only got half way through I just could not function from the cold and being wet. I will attempt this one again in warmer weather next year. The Wounded Warrior Project is very important to me and I do not regret the challenge!

I LOVE my Phillies!!! I am so proud to be born and raised in the Philadelphia area, especially proud of the Philadelpha Phillies Organization. There are so many hero's on the team that contribute to the greatness. . . Howard, Chooch, Utley, Halladay, Polanco, and many more. The man I think we all owe a great deal of thanks to is Charlie Manuel. . . our coach!! The definition of a good leader is someone who makes it easy for others to succeed. . . I am home safe and sound from Myrtle Beach!! I had some great stage time and gained a lot of experience this year! I did not come home as your new Mrs. All American Woman but I came come a greener person. I am still green and growing, I am a better person every time I put myself out on a limb and pageants do this for me. My goal in pageants was to improve my interview and communication skills, I feel I have done that. I had a perfect 50 and 2 49's from interviews on the first day so I could not ask for more. It was a very tough group of ladies competing and the judges in the end chose a beautiful representative inside and out. . . congrats Melissa!!!! I had quality time with my friend Marci and met some great new friends and I am thankful for that as well. Congrats to all the 2011 queens crowned at the Mrs. All American and All American pageants, best wishes for a successful year ahead!

Marci and I arrived here in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday evening. It was a great ride down, listened to some pageant CD's and chit chatted about our lives, you know the stuff we don't get to talk about very often. When we arrived if was raining but as the week went on the weather became worse. Orientation and interviews are delayed due to travel conditions. We did have the Luau last night and I had the opportunity to meet some of the current queens. The All American pageant organization is very well complimented by having these ladies in the family! They were just as beautiful on the inside as the outside. I hope all the judges and contestants arrive safe and sound. I can't wait for the competition to begin.

I judged my first USA local pageant, and had a blast!! Thanks to the NYC USA pageant organization for giving me this opportunity to judge Miss and Teen Manhattan USA. I had a fun filled weekend in NY with a friend and met some very inspiring young ladies. New York is certainly full of life and beautiful young ladies to compete for the title. I am convinced we have chosen very qualified candidates for the Miss and Teen New York USA pageant this year. Both titleholders very very impressive in interview and on stage!! Best wishes to the Manhattan USA organization and titleholders. Thanks again, I had a wonderful expreience and made some new friends!

I conquered the "Beast of the East," the McGuire Mud Run. Along with my friends and family, we had a very rewarding day running a 10k race through 18 obstacle courses. My favorite obstacle was the low crawl through mud and water just .75 miles into the run. My least favorite was climbing the 12ft wall made of plywood with dirt on the back side. This would have been an easy obstacle if I would have used the rope but I decided to be ambitious and run up it without using the rope. I made it all the way to the top with 3 giant reaches of my little legs and lost my grip at the top. You can guess how this went, I completely ate it, the wall that is lol! My abrasions were not that bad, my high socks completely saved my shins, just allowing the skin to be removed from my knee, elbow, forearm, and wrist. What an emotional moment crossing the finish line. A special thanks to all my friends and family for joining me on this event. The race takes place every September in support of our military, this years race was on September 11th, I couldn't think of a better way to spend the day in support of our Country. I look forward to next years race, and improving my time.

My Care Package

I have been volunteering with the Armed Forces Foundation for a few years now and each moment has been rewarding in it's own way. In the past, I have visited with wounded soldiers and our veterans. This time I decided to a little something for the soldiers who are away from their homes on duty in Afghanistan. I put together a few cases of toothbrushes and toothpaste and shipped them over to Camp Juliene and Camp Dubs in Afghanistan. I was introduced to a new friend who is serving there and is active with the Armed Forces Foundation, her name is Dawn Hicks. After speaking with Dawn she informed me that the soldiers could really use the toothbrushes and toothpaste. I wasted no time and got the package right out to them. My husband helped me carry the massive box to the Post Office and he told me not to be surprised if it took a few weeks to actually reach the soldiers. My husband has been serving in the United States Air Force for the past 10 years so of course I believed him. He said the package would need to go through a lot of hands before it reached our soldiers. I was glad he told me this because it did take several weeks, I would have thought the package got lost if he didn't warn me of this. A few weeks later I received a very special thanks from Dawn and the soldiers, it made me cry. I have gotten many thanks from all the children I have reached out to over the past 6 years but this one was different. I am so happy that I could do even the smallest thing to make our soldiers lives a little easier while stationed away from home.

This non profit organization was founded by a friend of mine and makes donations to new parents having financial difficulties obtaining important necessities for their babies. The luncheon was a fund raiser for her organization and also a send off party as Claire prepares for the Mrs. United States pageant in a few weeks. best wishes to you Claire, you already have made New Jersey proud!

Our friend Mary hosted a luau for an official send off party. Today we celebrated a few queens getting ready to go off to compete in their national pageant. We had plenty of laughs and tears today as we remembered all the events in our lives over the past 4 years. We all met competing together 4 years ago and our friendships have escalated to be priceless. Best wishes to Heather (Mrs. NJ International), Susan (Mrs. PA US), and of cousre to me (Mrs. NJ All American Woman). Oral Health Presentation Pre K and Kindergarten

The last week of the school year is here and I could tell the children are excited for summer. Today I spoke with some children in Pre K and Kindergarten about how to take care of their teeth. The children really enjoyed brushing BG Roo's teeth and his baby kangaroo too! I was able to give them all new Crest Spin Brushes and their very own tubes of toothpaste. The children like having their own toothpaste, from what they tell me. I hope the children and teachers enjoy their summer vacations! See you in the fall again!

Starlight Children's Foundation

Today I attended a brunch to raise money for the Starlight Children's Foundation. The America's Miss Organization is committed to helping children by being a supporter of the Starlight Children's Foundation. Today we raised funds in order to purchase a portable Wii Station for a local hospital. The Wii Stations (which has a computer/monitor/and Wii station games) are used to divert a child'...s attention while enduring painful treatments during hospital stays and / or visits. This event was hosted by Evelyn McLeod ( Mrs. New Jersey America's Mrs) and was held in Sea Bright New Jersey.

I spent the day with some wonderful friends in support of the Mrs. New Jersey United States Organization. The Mrs. New Jersey United States Organization is very special to me, they are responsible for many special friendships. In 2006, I entered my very 1st pageant, the Mrs. new jersey united States pageant. That year I met 5 ladies who today are very special friends of mine. I never would have imagined that i would walk away with that special of a prize package but I did!! I walked away with life long friendships and I thank my lucky stars that i decided to enter that pageant. Michelle and Chris are very supportive directors, I wish you a successful year. On May 14th I volunteered for my first career fair. I will admit, I was a little unprepared for the event, this being my first. It was a full days event and I had the opportunity to speak with the children about the profession of Dental Hygiene. Some of the professionals who volunteered were Engineers, Actuary, Registered Nurse, Psychiatrist, Police Officer, Fire Fighter, chef, Artist, and an entertainment crew. It was very nice meeting everyone and I will now know how to prepare myself for the next career fair.

Wow!! I have to say I am truly impressed with the ANTSO organization. I had the opportunity to judge the New Jersey National Teenager pageant this past weekend and it was a weekend I will never forget. ALL the young ladies were impressive, any one of them would have represented this state very well. I was honored to be on the main judges panel with 3 other inspirational men and women. I can say I am truly honored and I look forward to seeing them compete at the National competition this summer in Philadelphia.

What a great afternoon spent with some friends of mine. Today was the annual MS walk 2010. This was a 6.5 mile event raising money for MS. Our team leader is my very good friend Mary Moulds, this has been my 5th year participating in this event. Today I decided to run the 6.5 miles with my friends Ellie & John. You will notice in the earlier photos from the day I am a little more "put together" than after the 6.5 mile run. It was a great event for a great cause.

I am very pleased to announce that because of my blog, someone has reached out to me in efforts to help my classroom presentations. I got an e-mail this week from Chris who represents a dental educational company called Starsmilez. He noticed that during my oral health presentations I am using one of his company's products.. . my donkey named "little Bill." I was so touched when he offered to give me a Starsmilez character of my own to use during this in classroom presentations. Doc Bresler has been so generous to me over the past few years by donating toothbrushes and this donkey for my presentations. I am so excited that I will now have my own!! Stay tuned for photos of my new friend visiting classrooms throughout the New Jersey and Pennsylvania areas. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reaching out to me Chris, this is why I blog, so people can see that there are efforts out there and people are doing good things. We received some good advice form a few pageant coaches, tried on some evening gown, and met some very impressive young ladies!! I just adore Miss Delaware and Miss Pennsylvania America. They are 2 beautiful, intelligent, and approachable young ladies. I will be cheering you both on during the Miss America pageant.

New York International Pageants 2010

I had the opportunity to be the judges coordinator this weekend at the 2010 New York International Pageants. What an incredible weekend it was! I watched a very dear friend give her farewell speech and another receive the title of Mrs. New Jersey International 2010. I also had the opportunity to meet Virginia Thornton (Mrs. International 2005) and 2 very important people to the community in New York's Sullivan County, David Claisse with Bold Gold media Group and Michelle from Thunder 102. Virginia is an incredibly beautiful woman inside and out, her son "T" is the cutest little guy! An extra bonus was getting to meet 2 actors on All My Children, Jacob (JR Chandler) and Adam (Scott Chandler.) On the way home from the weekend's events we stopped in Bethel Woods to see the actual site of Woodstock and visit the Thunder 102 tent. We had an unforgettable girls weekend, lots of laughs! Today my CrossFit affiliate ( CrossFit South Philly ) joined forces with CrossFit Prime and CroosFit tribe to workout for a cause. Today's brutal workout consisted of 5 rounds of wall balls, Sumo deadlift highpulls, rowing, thrusters, and box jumps. My difficulty was making that 10' wall ball target but overall Jim and i finished well. Over 1 million dollars is raised each year across the country for this event funding the Wounded Warrior Project and Athletes For A Cure.

It is finally here, the weekend of Mrs. Pennsylvania US. I am looking forward to meeting the judges, getting to know my fellow delegates, and having some fun on stage! Good luck to all the delegates, both PA & MD. I am so impressed with the women I meet each year in pageantry. Special thanks to my friends & family for all your support and confidence in me, no matter what the outcome, you have been there for me to help me see all my accomplishments. I thank you all for that, and my husband. . . well I know this a little bias but he is the greatest husband in the world!! Thanks Jim for making me go to CrossFit even when I was exhausted from work, and thanks for being proud of me. Pageantry has allowed me to be inspired as well as inspire others, it has also made me be the best I can be. I will post on Monday after I return from Harrisburg, have a great weekend.

Philadelphia Broad Street Run

Today Jim and I participated in our first official race, benefiting finding a cure for cancer. The Philadelphia Broad Street Run. Our official time for the 10 mile run was 01:54:05, not bad for our first race. Thanks Jim for cheering me on the WHOLE 10 miles, you are an incredible inspiration to me. I feel truly blessed to have such a supportive husband, loving family and friends, and most importantly my health which gives me the opportunity to enjoy what life has to offer. This was an emotional day for me, there was so much support along the race from the cheering Philadelphia residents, local students, volunteers, and even Mayor Nutter & Gov Ed Rendell. I love you Philly, and Jim especially!!!

Visit with an American Hero

Today my friends Mary, Beth, and I got in the car and drove to Walter Reed Army Hospital in DC. We made the trip to see a soldier from our area who lost his leg in Iraq. About a year ago I met a special man by the name of Joe Finch, retired from the Army, he is now working as a civilian with the Army and volunteers a lot of his time with the wounded soldiers. He dropped me an e-mail about a month ago telling me about Bobby Andrzejczak, a 22 year old wounded soldier from Cape may NJ. When I first met Joe I was Mrs. New Jersey so he thought it would be special if I could gather some of my pageant friends to pay Bobby a visit. Of course when I mentioned it to my friends they were as excited as I was to pay a visit to this American Hero. We brought him some gifts, Philly Soft Pretzels, Tastycake, magazines and Phillies/Eagles autographed items. One of the things Bobby lost during the blast was his wallet so Mary had a wallet to give Bobby that had a lot of sentimental value attached, and we all chipped in to fill it with some money that he lost that day. What a great afternoon i spent with Bobby, Joe, and my friends. We are planning our next outing with Bobby, probably a trip to see the Philadelphia Phillies, Bobby has not been to Citizens Bank Park yet.

Sealant Saturday

February 7th was the annual "Sealant Saturday" event hosted by the Philadelphia Dental Hygienists' Association. We had a great day today, it was a pleasure meeting the students at Community College of Philadelphia and helping them perform dental sealants with ease!! This was the 8th year for the annual event which provides over $10,000 in free dental services to uninsured children throughout Philadelphia. I love working with the children and mentoring the students at the same time. It is an EXTREMELY rewarding day, in more ways than one. I spent the morning getting some new headshots taken. With my drastic hair difference, I could not get away with the same headshot as last year. Recently in my dental office, I met Nel, she is a photographer with Pushnik Photo here in Philadelphia. I recently judged the R-Phils Dance Team final audition. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to be around that dance element again, catch up with some friends and meet new people. You might remember from a post last year, this is where I first met little Jerzi Schur. Through the year we have kept in touch and I have helped mentor and sponsor her through her first pageant competition. I truly enjoyed being a part of a team with these ladies, it's like having another family. I am so glad to keep in touch with them and hear about all the exciting things they are up to. Carson Elementary School

Today, I visited Carson Elementary School to provide an oral health presentation to their children, grades pre K - 4th were present(375 children.) The children were so thankful for their toothbrushes and all the information they received. I really enjoyed my visit, they were so well behaved and really had an interest. A special thanks to the school nurse Meg Snyder for inviting me out, she really loves her job and is concerned about keeping her children healthy. She has a chart in her room with the names of children that lost teeth during a school day. Last year they lost a total of 76 teeth during school time, let's see how they do this year. Love that idea!!

I attended the Miss New Jersey outstanding Teen pageant tonight with my friends, Susan and Heather. it was a good show, and a close call in my eyes. I could not get over the voices on some of the girls, like Savannah for example. New Jersey should be proud. Sitting in the audience, I had picked Brenna to win, she was absolutely adorable, and I loved her talent, it was unique and impressionable. All the contestants did a great job. Best wishes to Brenna this year. I did not get pictures after the pageant, we were ready for bed. It was nice spending the night with you both!!

It is that time of year again. My husband is a mummer, mummering is about both family and tradition. Every year Philadelphia celebrates New Years Day with the "Philadelphia Mummers Parade." My husband's family has a mummers brigade of over 100 members, he has been marching since he was 5 years old. Here are a few pics from the annual fundraiser. What an amazing year! Every year from January to March, the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists' Association promotes "Sealant Saturday." This was my 14th year involved in a community dental sealant program and this year was a great success. This year, we had 250 volunteers, placed 2801 dental sealants and performed $155,807.26 in preventative services to 676 uninsured children. Each year gets better and better, I am looking forward to our growth and continuing to make our children healthier one smile at a time! Over the past 7 years, "Sealant saturday" has enabled the PDHA to contribute over 1 million dollars of free dental services to children across the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This is only a small fraction of what the ADHA is doing to make a difference. Alone, I am just a movement but together we are a force, Thank You!

Mrs. New Jersey participates in 8th annual African & Carribean Health Fair in West Philadelphia

We had a successful day today at the Africom Health Fair. We anticipated 500 visitors from the West Philadelphia community, we came prepared with samples, gloves, and masks. This was a day where I walked away knowing I have helped to enhance the overall health and well-being of others. The health fair offered a day of free health screenings, blood pressure, HIV testing and counseling, diabetes counseling, dental health education/screening, and more. I am proud to be a contributing member of the ADHA, our Philadelphia component is making a difference, good work!!!

What a great journey. This week has been a wonderful opportunity to make some new relationships, I also got to visit with some children from the Chicago area, that was a once in a lifetime!! I went out there with a very good friend Mrs, PA, however I made some met some incredible ladies whom I wish to keep in touch with, Mrs. Idaho, Mrs. Arkansas, Mrs. Virgin Islands, Mrs. California, Mrs. Florida, Mrs. Ohio, and Mrs. Hawaii. All the ladies were wonderful, these are the ladies that I had the opportunity to get to know the BEST. Of course, I loved meeting with the East Coast ladies, Mrs. VA, Mrs.DC, , and Mrs. NY, I will certainly be in touch, great ladies. What an incredible day today. I spent the morning with some fellow contestants (Mrs. Idaho, Mrs. Pennsylvania, & myself,) we hopped in the rental car and drove into the city to visit some very special children. I can not tell you how appreciative they were that we were there. We each spoke to them about our platforms, oral health, heart health, & higher education. We truly were able to inspire them to stay healthy and stay in school. Thanks so much ladies for your company today and Kevin (Mr. Idaho) for driving us there.

This will be a very special event for me, returning to the college that I graduated from 14 years ago to present an award that represents everything that I have worked so hard to achieve with my oral health education program. Here is a description of the award and the attributes of Clark J. Hollister. The Clark J. Hollister Award is presented by the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association to a student in each of the Dental Hygiene schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a memorial to Dr. Clark J. I returned to Walnut Street today for 1st grade presentations. The Kindergarten classes presented me with a nice thank you banner from my last visit with them. A special thanks to my new friend Seven, she was a great helper for me today, escorting me to the 1st grade classes. This six year old girl has a magnetic personality, I just enjoyed her smile and warmth from the 1st moment I met her in the cafeteria. All the students were a pleasure to meet at Walnut Street, it is nice to see their little personalities already developing. I sat in the very same Kindergarten class today that I sat in about 30 years ago. This was a very special school visit for me today to say the least. A few weeks ago my local newspaper here in New Jersey printed a front page article about me and my children's oral health presentations. A few days later I received an E-Mail from a teacher in Darby Borough, where I grew up, commending me for my efforts with the children and inquiring where I went to grade school. Here she teaches at Walnut Street, where I went to grade school, she asked if I would come there to do my presentation for inspirational and educational purposes. I had such a great day today, the children were so sweet, they cheered for me as I walked through the cafeteria, what an inspirational visit for the children and for myself. I remember my challenges I faced growing up and I am thankful for them every day, they will always be with me, in a good way, I am me because of them. What an amazing team of teachers I met today, you can tell they truly care about the students, after all they reached out to me to bring something special to their children. A special thanks to Maryellen Turner for caring enough!!! I'll be back in a few weeks Walnut Street.

What a fun night! I spent the night bowling with my husband and our family all for a good cause. We put together a ladies team and a gentleman's team, I did get a strike on my very first attempt tonight, how exciting that was. I spent most of the night meeting people involved with the March of Dimes and taking pictures with the rest of the bowlers, what a fun event. The bowling shoes were really not bad, I would wear them with a fun t-shirt for a casual day out!! Thank you Ashley from the March of Dimes for asking me to make an appearance. The Lighthouse community center

Today I visited The Lighthouse community center in North Philadelphia, this was a productive visit and an encouraging visit. I had to really utilize my speaking skills with the children today, we could not get the VCR to cooperate for my "Wiggly Tooth" video so my entire presentation was speaking, hands on brushing and a lot of Q & A. It was a learning experience for all. One of the things that I tell the Philadelphia children during my introduction is. . . why Mrs. New Jersey is in their Philadelphia neighborhood speaking to them about their teeth. I am there because I have a desire to make all children healthier and I especially do not want to forget where I have grown up, I was born in Darby, PA a small town right on the out skirts of Southwest Philadelphia(2 blocks away.) I hope it is encouraging for them to see the person I have become and the person they all can be. I remember my first presentation, I was a bit nervous and I had difficulty keeping their attention. I can honestly say that I have come a long way, I feel completely comfortable speaking to the children & teachers regardless of the size and conditions!! I have a lot of respect for teachers and all those working to improve the lives of our children. A special thanks to Fidel for your help today, you tried to get that VCR working for me!! Maybe I can come back in when I get my VHS tape converted to DVD!!

Cold Springs Elementary on St. Patrick's Day

Today was my 1st day of a series of presentations at Cold Springs.This is actually my 2nd year back at Cold Springs Elementary, I gave my presentation to the children in this school last year, how nice it was for me to return as Mrs. New Jersey this year, hopefully I will be returning next school year as Mrs. International! Regardless, I will be returning there next year, the children really enjoyed the presentation, I received great feedback from some parents and the teachers have been wonderful to me. Last year my presentations helped win this school a grant for "building healthier communities," they received $2000 for participating in classroom activity to improve the health of their children, which they used for a field trip. I am honored to know that my presentations are helping these children in more ways than one!

National Children's Dental Health month is over, I am still having fun every week visiting schools throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I helped one little girl find a dental home today, she has not yet been to a dentist for a check-up or cleaning, I gave her parents some critical information and re assured her that her first visit to the dentist is nothing that she needs to worry about. Each week I educate over 100 children, if I can walk away knowing that I have helped improve the oral health of 1 child I have accomplished something. I hope it would be more than 1 child, but I am happy with just that.

Reading Phillies cheerleaders final audition

Today I had the opportunity to judge the Reading Phillies cheerleading team final audition. Some of the celebrity judges today were, myself (Kimberly Meehan), Vi (Philadelphia Sixers Dancer), Danielle (Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader) and Danielle (Philadelphia Soul Dancer.) I danced with these ladies on the Reading Express dance team a few seasons ago, it was nice to see them and hear about their amazing adventures this past year. There was a little girl by the name of Jerzi Schur(Jersey Shore)present, she was one of the little diamond diva dancers that were performing, she said she was my biggest fan. She was the cutest little thing, keep dancing, maybee you will try pageants soon! I wish the 2008 Reading Phillies cheerleading team nothing but the best for their inaugural season.

Sealant Saturday was a success again this year, we placed 165 dental sealants today, just in the Philadelphia location. Thanks to the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists' Association, Community College of Philadelphia, students, staff, and volunteers we have managed to help those children uninsured get the dental treatment they need. I love the opportunity to help the children and mentor the current students all at the same time. My wish is to be an inspiration to the students, showing them a good example of the many arena's that a dental hygienist can serve in.

Today I began my kick-off for National Children's Dental Health month(February.) I am starting off in my home town of Brooklawn, at Alice Costello Elementary School, where I will be visiting every class from K-3. Normally I volunteer every Friday to do my school presentations, however the month of February I will be visiting different schools throughout NJ and PA every Monday and Friday, so that I can try to reach out to as many children as possible during this month. The children were very excited to learn about their teeth today, but they were more excited at the fact that Mrs. New Jersey was in their very own classroom. This is why I do what I do, I feel that I can help them to understand the importance of a healthy smile without the "crown", but the "crown" sure helps when I am trying to set an example for them.

Shortly after my presentation at Alice Costello elementary School, I received these thank-you notes at my home from the children. It seems the children really enjoyed my presentation, I hope they think of me when they are deciding whether or not to brush their teeth before bed. You can see from these letters and drawings, they really absorbed my presentation, this makes me very happy! Not only because they sent these letters but that they actually remembered what I taught them after I left. I feel so lucky to be able to share my knowledge with these children, the response that I have been getting from the children, teachers, administration, city officials and parents has been more than I expected. I guess when we implement community outreach into our lives on a regular basis we sometimes feel that it is expected of us, this shows that it is not expected but greatly appreciated!

Another rewarding day in the community. These children are so beautiful inside and out. They were so happy to have me in their classroom today and to learn about how to take care of their smiles. I truly feel blessed to have the ability to enhance their lives.

My visit to Brown Community Center

I met some very impressive young ladies today at Brown Community center. These girls were my helpers today, they demonstrated proper brushing for the class. Look for Jairelis on America's Next Top Model in about 10 years, the girl sure can strike a pose. One of my helpers is missing from the picture. . . Devon, I guess he did not want to take a picture with the girls.

A very special thanks to Dr David Bresler for donating ALL the toothbrushes to the children that I visit each week. This school year alone I will be handing out over 10,000 toothbrushes to these children and most importantly, giving them a referral source for their dental care. Doc Bresler's Cavity Busters Team has been very active in the community for many years, it is encouraging to know there are other dental professionals in the community trying to make a difference and it makes me feel honored to have his support in my endeavors.

What a great night benefiting the "Make-a-Wish" Foundation. I spent the evening with some great friends and I had the opportunity to meet Stephanie Hunt, the reigning Mrs. United States 2007. Congratulations to my friend Heather Cunningham (Mrs. New Jersey united States 2007) and her directors for a successful evening.

Here they are. . . my pageant family. They say you make your most endearing friendships in your 30's and I can say that is true. My college friends and my pageant friends are going to be life long for me. We all came out tonight to support our friend Angela Burns crown the new Mrs. Delaware America 2008.
